If you're searching for that radiant glow, your answer might be simpler, and cheaper, than you think. You might have tried countless 'laboratory-designed' products hoping to achieve perfect skin. Yet it's often nature that holds the best solutions. Bentonite clay is a natural 'super ingredient' used for centuries, probably due to its simplicity and ability to detoxify and purify skin.
What is Bentonite Clay?
Our bentonite clay is a natural clay formed from volcanic ash. It comes from Australia where it is harvested, dried and milled with no chemicals used. With a high mineral content, including calcium, magnesium, and potassium, this clay has many benefits for your skin, such as tackling acne, excess oil, and dullness.
Its gentle nature makes it suitable for all skin types, and it has a detoxifying and remineralising effect that some commercial products struggle to achieve.
Bentonite Clay Face Masks Promote Healthier Skin With:
1. Deep Cleansing and Detox Properties
Bentonite clay’s unique negative charge attracts and binds positively charged toxins, heavy metals, and pollutants, helping to clear your skin of buildup that can cause breakouts and dullness.
2. Oil Control
Bentonite clay effectively absorbs excess sebum, which is especially beneficial for oily or combination skin types, reducing shine and helping to maintain a fresh and matte appearance. In humid climates or during the summer months, this can make all the difference.
3. Exfoliation
As your mask dries, it gently exfoliates dead skin cells and stimulates new cell growth. This process reveals a smoother complexion and more even skin tone.
4. Soothing Inflammation
Bentonite clay has natural anti-inflammatory properties that calm redness and irritation, making it suitable even for sensitive or acne-prone skin.
5. Tightening Pores
Not only does bentonite clay cleanse and exfoliate, but it also tightens pores. This tightening effect leads to a firmer appearance, minimizing the look of enlarged pores.
Supporting skin's mineral balance
Rich in minerals like calcium, magnesium, and silica, bentonite clay nourishes your skin and promotes tissue repair and rejuvenation.

How to Use a Bentonite Clay Mask:
Step 1: Cleanse Your Face
Start with a clean canvas. Remove makeup, dirt, and oils with your usual cleanser* to allow the mask to work effectively. * I like to use fractionated coconut oil for this step. Though, because I don’t wear makeup, I often skip this part!
Step 2: Prepare the Mask
Mix bentonite clay powder with enough water or apple cider vinegar to create a smooth, spreadable paste. For sensitive skin, water is gentler; apple cider vinegar adds extra detoxifying power but can be strong. Consider patch testing first.
NB – don’t use a metal spoon or bowl for this - Because clay is good at removing heavy metals, any metal touching it will deplete its detoxing powers. You want that to be working on your skin, not the spoon!
Step 3: Apply Evenly
Using clean fingers or a brush, apply a thin, even layer to your face, avoiding the delicate eye area. Focus on areas prone to oiliness or congestion like the T-zone.
Step 4: Relax and Let The Mask Dry
Leave the mask on for 10 -15 minutes. You’ll feel it tighten as it dries, which is normal. Avoid leaving it too long to prevent over-drying, especially if you have sensitive skin (I’ve been known to get engrossed in a book and leave the mask on for way too long, resulting in a very pink and tingly face for a good half hour or so!).
Step 5: Rinse Off Gently
Use lukewarm water and a soft cloth to remove the mask thoroughly. Pat your skin dry with a clean towel.
Step 6: Moisturise
Follow with your favourite moisturiser to replenish hydration and lock in the benefits of the mask. Clay masks can sometimes leave skin feeling a bit dry.
Tips for Making the Most of Your Clay Mask:
Consistency is key: Using a bentonite clay mask once or twice a week is ideal for most skin types. Oily or acne-prone skin may benefit from up to three times weekly, while dry or sensitive skin might want to limit use to once a week.
Listen to your skin: If you notice excessive dryness or redness, reduce frequency or adjust your mask ingredients (see suggestions below).
Make it a ritual: Set aside time for your mask session as a moment of self-care. Light a candle, play soothing music, and enjoy the calming experience. I’ll typically apply my face mask while I’m relaxing in the bath. This definitely makes it easier to rinse off.
Customize your mask: Experiment with natural additives like oats for gentle, soothing exfoliation, honey for moisture, or essential oils for targeted benefits, eg tea tree for antibacterial and calming effects.
More Than Skin Deep
Incorporating a bentonite clay mask into your weekly routine offers more than just surface-level benefits. Beyond skin cleansing, a weekly bentonite clay mask can be a mindful ritual that supports your overall wellbeing. Taking time to care for your skin encourages relaxation, reduces stress, and aids a positive self-image. The calming texture and natural ingredients connect you to a simple, grounding practice that nourishes both body and mind.
