Can You Use Magnesium Oil More Than Once a Day?

A question I was recently asked is: “Is it safe to use magnesium oil more than once a day?” The short answer is yes, it’s perfectly safe. In fact, many people find that using it more than once daily gives them the best results. Why is that?
Your Body Only Absorbs What It Needs
When you apply magnesium oil to your skin, the magnesium is absorbed directly into your bloodstream and tissues. Your body is pretty clever - it only takes in what it needs. You don’t have to worry about applying too much, because your body has built-in checks and balances. Any you don’t need, you’ll simply excrete.
Having said that, many of us are thought to have lower than optimum magnesium levels (see the below point) so it’s unlikely you’ll spray on too much. Depending on how hard you press your nozzle, 6-8 sprays will give you about 100mg of magnesium. The RDA for magnesium is 320mg for women (more if you’re pregnant or breast-feeding) and 420mg for men.
Daily Life Uses Up Magnesium Quickly
Modern life makes big demands on our magnesium levels. Stress, busy schedules, caffeine, alcohol, and even certain medications all deplete this essential mineral. The only thing you might notice if you use a lot of magnesium oil in one spot is a tingling or itchy sensation on the skin. This isn’t harmful. If it bothers you, you can apply a plain moisturiser, or dilute your magnesium oil with added water. Experiment with where you apply your magnesium oil. In most people, the feet do not experience this sensation. However, constant use in the same area can be drying (it’s a salt product) so it is nice to mix up where you apply your oil.
There is one ‘side effect’ that some people like – regular use of transdermal magnesium helps them stay ‘regular’ in terms of bathroom visits. If you take too much magnesium orally, this can lead to uncomfortable digestive issues such as loose bowel movements. Using your mag oil spray on your skin bypasses the digestive system , gently aiding the situation, without explosive dramas!
