"I rub the magnesium oil with lavender into my feet every night. It helps me sleep and reduces soreness from my plantar fascia also." - Bev, Salt & Oil customer.
This recent review got me thinking - it must be time to write about how magnesium can help relieve plantar fasciitis and heel pain.
If you’ve ever stepped out of bed and felt a sharp pain shoot through your heel, or dreaded attending an event that involves lots of standing around on aching feet, you’ll know how frustrating plantar fasciitis can be.
Plantar fasciitis is one of the most common causes of heel pain, and it seems to be affecting more and more of us. Busy parents, retail workers, teachers, runners, gym-goers, and anyone who spends long hours on their feet can experience it.
Plantar fasciitis happens when the thick band of tissue along the bottom of your foot (the plantar fascia) becomes irritated or strained. It can feel:
• Sharp or stabbing in the heel
• Worse first thing in the morning
• Tight after long periods of sitting
• Sore after lots of walking or standing
A few common contributors include:
Tight calves or Achilles tendons
Sudden increases in activity
Unsupportive footwear
Long hours on hard surfaces
High-impact training without adequate recovery
I've had it in both feet on and off for about 15 years. A physio once told me - some people have bad teeth, some people have bad skin, you have bad ligaments.
There's not really much I can do about improving my ligaments, but, after trialing many treatments, I have worked out what helps me keep on top of things (foot strengthening exercises, calf stretching, and the kind of shoes I wear are the main ones).
One major feature in easing my symptoms has been transdermal magnesium.
It's by no means a cure, but this is how using our magnesium oil spray can help with plantar fasciitis and foot and heel pain relief:
Tight calves often contribute to your pain as they pull and tighten the ligaments in your feet. Applying magnesium oil to your calves and the soles of the feet can help support muscle relaxation and reduce that “pulling” feeling.
Many people like to:
• Spray magnesium oil onto their calves before bed (it's also great for reducing cramps and restless legs) which is also great as part of your wind-down routine.
• Massage magnesium oil into their arches and heels.
• Use the oil during the day when they experience pain. But bear in mind, consistency is better than intensity - do get into the habit of applying your magnesium oil every day, regardless.
Another lovely end of day ritual is a foot soak with magnesium flakes.
The warm water and magnesium boost can help:
• Encourage muscle relaxation.
• Ease foot tension.
• Support overall mind and body calming to help you ease into sleep.
1/4 - 1/2 a cup in a basin of warm water for about 15 minutes does the job nicely.
Plantar fasciitis can take time to settle. It’s rarely about one quick fix.
Small daily habits could include:
Finding comfortable footwear that works for you.
Gentle stretching.
Rolling a golf ball or spiky ball under your feet.
Magnesium support applied to the area eg magnesium oil spray and magnesium baths or foot soaks.
If your heels or arches have been complaining lately, consider this your reminder to give them a little extra care.
If pain persists, worsens, or affects your mobility, seek guidance from a qualified healthcare professional.
Your feet carry you everywhere - they deserve some support!
